Db Aaron Grymes Retires From Cfl Joins Elks As Assistant Coach

Aaron Grymes Begins CFL Coaching Career with Elks

Grymes Ends Playing Career with BC Lions

After 14 seasons and 233 games played in the Canadian Football League, defensive back Aaron Grymes has decided to retire from playing and join the Edmonton Elks as their defensive backs coach.

Grymes, 35, was a pending free agent after spending the past two seasons with the BC Lions. The two-time CFL All-Star and 2016 Grey Cup champion spent 12 of his 14 seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, recording 35 interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

Grymes also played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2019 and had a brief stint with the NFL's New York Giants in 2017.

Grymes Excited about Coaching Opportunity

Grymes says that he is excited about the opportunity to coach in the CFL and learn from Elks head coach Chris Jones.

"I'm really looking forward to working with Chris Jones and the rest of the Elks coaching staff," Grymes said in a statement. "I think I can bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the team, and I'm eager to help the Elks win a championship."

Jones says that he is happy to add Grymes to his coaching staff.

"Aaron is a great addition to our coaching staff," Jones said in a statement. "He's a proven winner and a great leader. I'm confident that he can help our defensive backs reach their full potential."

Grymes Expected to be Valuable Asset

Grymes is expected to be a valuable asset to the Elks coaching staff. He has a wealth of experience in the CFL, and he is a respected leader.

The Elks are hoping that Grymes can help them improve their defense, which ranked 7th in the CFL in 2022. The Elks allowed 25.3 points per game last season.

Grymes will be tasked with coaching a young group of defensive backs, led by second-year cornerback Tre Watson and third-year safety Scott Hutter.

The Elks are scheduled to begin their 2023 season on June 8 at home against the Ottawa Redblacks.
