A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook the San Joaquin Valley late Tuesday, sending tremors across Southern California.

The quake struck at 10:33 p.m. PT about 18 miles southwest of Bakersfield, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake was initially reported with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 but was later downgraded to 5.3.

The temblor was felt across a wide area, including Los Angeles, Ventura, and San Diego.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

However, the quake did cause some power outages and disruptions to water service in some areas.

The USGS said there were several aftershocks following the main quake, including one with a magnitude of 4.5.

Seismologists say the area where the quake struck is known for seismic activity and is part of the San Andreas Fault system.
