Kamala Harris: From Howard to History
By Caché McClay, BBC News, Washington
Before Kamala Harris became the first female Vice President of the United States, she was a young student at Howard University.
In 1986, Harris was photographed with a group of fellow students at the historically black university. The snapshot captured a generation of young black Americans on the cusp of adulthood, and it now offers a glimpse into the life of one of the most powerful women in the world.
Harris is the 49th and current vice president of the United States, serving under President Joe Biden since 2021. She is the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American to hold the office.
